Position Details

Summary
The Finance Director is a vital leadership position responsible for managing all financial operations of the school. This role ensures the fiscal health, transparency, and compliance of the school, overseeing budgeting, accounting, auditing, and grant management activities for a small Michigan charter high school with an annual budget of approx. 1.3 million. The successful candidate will possess strong financial acumen, attention to detail, and a commitment to supporting the school’s educational mission. This is a part-time position, with primarily remote/hybrid work and may be ideal for a retired or free-lance candidate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of the Finance Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

Grant Management and Compliance

  • Manage all state and federal grant applications , including securing, processing, and submitting all required documentation (e.g., Title I, IDEA, etc.).
  • Ensure strict compliance with all reporting requirements, expenditure guidelines, and deadlines associated with grant funding.
  • Track the use of grant funds, maintaining clear and auditable records to ensure appropriate allocation and use.

Coordinate with program directors to ensure alignment between program goals and grant fiscal requirements.

Financial Planning and Budget Management

  • Lead the documentation, and monitoring of the school’s annual operating budget and revisions in coordination with the Head of School and Board of Directors.
  • Prepare and submit all required budget documentation to the authorizer, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), and other relevant state and federal agencies.
  • Conduct financial forecasting and analysis to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Monitor expenditures against the budget, providing regular, detailed financial reports.

Accounting and Audit Coordination

  • Oversee all general accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Ensure all financial records and transactions comply with relevant state and federal regulations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the annual independent financial audit, coordinating all activities and documentation required by the auditors.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard the school’s assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.

Other Responsibilities

  • Provide financial training and guidance to administrative staff and board members as needed.
  • Assist the Head of School with other administrative and operational duties as agreed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, preferably in a non-profit or educational setting. Experience with Michigan K-12 school finance is highly preferred.
  • Experience with federal and state grant management and compliance is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP and governmental accounting standards.
  • Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Excel for budgeting and reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive financial information.
