Key Responsibilities for Network Security Engineer:
- Design, implement, and manage secure network architectures, including segmentation, access control, and encryption to protect organizational assets from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
- Monitor and analyze network traffic using advanced tools (e.g., Wireshark, tcpdump) to detect and respond to security threats in real-time.
- Configure and manage firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, Check Point), IDS/IPS systems (e.g., Snort, Suricata), and VPNs (e.g., IPsec, SSL VPN) to prevent unauthorized access and ensure secure communication.
- Perform regular vulnerability assessments using tools like Nessus, OpenVAS, and Qualys to identify potential weaknesses and mitigate risks.
- Conduct penetration testing to simulate cyberattacks, using tools like Metasploit, Burp Suite, and Nmap to assess network security resilience and exploit weaknesses.
- Develop and enforce network security policies, including firewall rules, access control lists (ACLs), and network segmentation to protect sensitive information.
- Integrate and manage Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions (e.g., Splunk, ArcSight, QRadar) to collect, correlate, and analyze log data for identifying security events and incidents.
- Respond to and mitigate network security incidents, utilizing incident response tools (e.g., OSSEC, Sumo Logic) to ensure minimal downtime and effective recovery.
- Regularly update and patch network systems, servers, and devices to address security vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with security standards (e.g., NIST, CIS, ISO 27001).
- Work closely with IT and engineering teams to ensure secure configurations of network devices (e.g., routers, switches, and access points) by implementing security best practices such as hardening, firmware updates, and password policies.
- Educate staff on best practices for network security, such as phishing awareness, secure password management, and safe web browsing, to minimize the risk of human error.
- Create and maintain comprehensive network security documentation, including network topology, threat models, and incident response procedures for future reference and audits.
- Prepare detailed security reports and presentations for stakeholders and management, outlining potential risks, incidents, and recommended mitigations.
- Continuously stay updated on the latest cybersecurity trends, vulnerabilities, attack methods, and defense strategies, and implement appropriate countermeasures.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and frameworks, such as GDPR, HIPAA, PCI DSS, and ISO 27001, by conducting regular security audits and assessments.
Qualifications and Experience Required for Network Security Engineer:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of hands-on experience in network security, IT security, or a similar role.
- Strong knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, SSL/TLS) and security concepts (firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS).
- Hands-on experience with firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, Fortinet) and advanced security appliances.
- Proficiency with IDS/IPS solutions like Snort, Suricata, and Cisco Firepower to detect and respond to network attacks.
- Expertise in performing vulnerability assessments and penetration testing using tools like Nessus, Burp Suite, Metasploit, and Nmap.
- Deep understanding of network segmentation, access control, and secure remote access technologies (e.g., SSL VPN, IPsec).
- Experience in deploying and managing SIEM tools such as Splunk, QRadar, or LogRhythm to monitor and analyze security events.
- Familiarity with cloud security concepts, including securing cloud infrastructures on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Strong knowledge of encryption technologies and protocols (e.g., IPsec, SSL/TLS, AES) and managing digital certificates.
- Expertise in regulatory frameworks and compliance standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, PCI DSS, and ISO 27001.
- Relevant certifications like CISSP, CEH, CCNP Security, CompTIA Security+, or GIAC are highly preferred.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and experience responding to and mitigating real-time network security incidents.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams and conveying complex security concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
