We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual to work as full-time research scientist for a period of one or two years. The start date can be as early as August 1, 2025.
This position is ideal for someone who has a long-term interest in economics research and is planning to go to graduate school in economics, finance, or a related field. You will work closely with NYU Stern Professors Theresa Kuchler and Johannes Stroebel on projects of theirs and their coauthors (including Raj Chetty at Harvard and Matt Jackson at Stanford).
You will work on projects studying the role of social networks and social capital on a range of economic outcomes, including social mobility and investment decisions. To get a sense of the type of projects you would be working on, have a look at the coverage in the New York Times of our recent social capital and social connectedness projects.
The ideal candidate would have strong general coding skills (Python, SQL, Scikit-Learn) as well as knowledge of statistical software packages (Stata, R). Because of the potential for close interaction with research teams at Facebook/Meta, training in both economics and computer science would be a bonus, but not a requirement.
Our previous research scientists have become co-authors on the various projects they worked on (see here , here , here , here , here , here and here for examples) , and have joined Harvard, Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School, Berkeley, NYU, and Columbia for graduate school after their time at NYU Stern.
The position will be based in New York City (near Washington Square Park), and research scientists are invited to participate in the academic life at NYU, for example by attending research seminars and PhD courses.
In compliance with NYC?s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $50,440-$60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
The ideal candidate will:
(i) have a strong quantitative background, ideally some training in CS (e.g., ML tools)
(ii) have strong coding skills (Stata, R, Python);
(iii) be able to work independently to solve problems; and
(iv) have a long-term interest in pursuing research in economics and or finance.
