Executive Director – Job Description

Job Classification: Employee, Salary

Job Location: Remote, strongly prefer physical residence within 75 mile radius of Albuquerque, NM or a willingness to relocate within 3 months of hire

Compensation: $60,000+ salary / per year

Work Hours: Typically 40 hours per week, with some weeks requiring additional hours as needed; occasional night and or weekend work will be required

Exempt from Overtime: Yes

Reports To: Red Media Board of Directors; Fiscal Sponsorship Leadership Committees

Begin Date: November 2025

About Us

Red Media Press is a media nonprofit 501(c)(3) producing and publishing work written by and for Indigenous Peoples. We focus on creative collaboration, centering Indigenous intelligence and commentary in all its forms. Red Media produces content according to Indigenous intellectual traditions and not those imposed upon us by settler culture. We believe in Indigenous abundance and aim to inspire, caretake, and hold space for Indigenous writers and creators by publishing a worldwide range of podcast, video and written works. Red Media is now ready to hire its first Executive Director. You will work closely with a highly academic volunteer board and a small but dedicated veteran staff, all of whom are committed to sustaining Red Media and executing its long-term vision and growth.

Role Overview

We are seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead Red Media with equal focus on:

  • Fiduciary Excellence and Fundraising

  • Operational Excellence

Core Responsibilities

1. Fiduciary Excellence and Fundraising

  • Build and diversify revenue streams by increasing donations, successfully writing grants, conducting annual fundraising campaigns, and increasing earned income
  • Cultivate and maintain major donor and grantor relationships in order to support the longevity and visibility of Red Media
  • Develop and execute accurate, pristine financial and budget reports for both Red Media and its fiscal sponsorships
  • Ensure timely compliance with all local, state and federal laws for tax reporting and or fiscal audits
  • Prepare the organization for a successful fiscal audit
  • Conduct all data gathering and record keeping necessary for all grant, fiscal and programmatic reporting
  • Direct the organization and fiscal sponsor’s financial operations, including: accounts receivable and payable, expense management, revenue management, and budget creation and adherence

2. Advancing Our Mission

  • Positively and professionally represent Red Media to external partners and communities
  • Oversee the quality and development of Red Media’s Programs, including its Podcast and Press Programs
  • Direct, spearhead and review Red Media’s strategic plan, in collaboration with its Board of Directors
  • Speak and write about Red Media in order to increase awareness about Indigenous media and the excellence of our organization
  • Build relationships with diverse stakeholders who are in support of our vision and organization
  • Develop a working knowledge and literacy of podcasts and the book publishing industry to support the further development of these programs

3. Operational Excellence

  • Lead, manage and oversee all employees and contractors of the organization
  • Direct and implement all human resources for the organization, including: talent acquisition and retention, contracts and payroll, compliance, benefits and performance reviews
  • Lead and collaborate with all staff and contractors, bringing forth a communicative, cohesive and collaborative work environment that supports creativity and accountability
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with all staff, contractors, stakeholders and the Board of Directors in order to carry out the responsibilities of the position
  • Perform all evaluations, data collection and record keeping for the organization and the Board of Directors
  • Guide and support board development and recruitment
  • Operate in a spirit of solidarity to help with other key activities and responsibilities of the organization when needed or available
  • Develop positive,supportive relationships with our fiscal sponsorship(s)
  • Conduct program, staff and organizational reviews to improve progress or outline areas needing adaptation

Required Qualifications

  • Enthusiastic commitment to Red Media’s vision and mission
  • Proven experience working with Indigenous communities and nations
  • 2-4 years in an executive role or comparable management position, strongly preferring experience in directing / managing a Native or Indigenous 501(c)(3) organization
  • Expertise in Indigenous politics, art, culture and / or history
  • Value and enjoy a collaborative work environment based on a combination of Indigenous ethics of relationality and best-practices in nonprofit management
  • 2-4 years experience successfully managing nonprofit financials, fundraising, grant writing and reporting, and board development
  • 2+ years experience providing human resource expertise while also creating collaborative work environments
  • Strong leadership experience with proven managerial and leadership capabilities
  • Self-directed, proactive and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Capable of working productively and efficiently in an all remote work environment
  • Close attention to detail and strong organization and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders and creators
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to clearly prioritize work in order to meet deadlines
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of a variety of programs, including Google Suite, Quickbooks Online, Microsoft 365, Paychex, various social media and communications accounts, WordPress and computers
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the needs of state and federal reporting websites
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial and personnel policies and procedures
  • A Bachelor’s Degree, strongly preferring a Graduate or Post-Secondary Professional Degree
  • Willingness and ability to gain proficiency in new areas necessary to direct and support all programs of Red Media
  • The ability to travel occasionally for work
