The School of Medicine - Psychiatry - Addiction Research & Treatment has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Research Nurse. The Nurse position functions as a registered professional nurse within a public medical research institution coordinating program activities, providing direct patient care, and supporting research and healthcare initiatives. This specific position primarily focuses on community-based care, particularly for older adults with addictions, and involves clinical, programmatic, and research responsibilities in collaboration with the University of Maryland (UM) Health and Recovery Program (HARP), UM Addictions Treatment Center, and other healthcare teams and community partners. The position reports to the Multi-Modal Aging Friendly Addiction Services (MAFAS) Program Director and the HARP Nurse Supervisor.

Primary Duties

• Collaborates with supervisors, the HARP (healthcare) team, University of Maryland Addictions Treatment Center, and community partners to address the current crisis by improving treatment and outcomes for individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
• Manages operations and activities of one or more programs or research studies requiring the expertise and care of a Registered Nurse.
• Initiates and implements health related programs for community-based Multi-modal Aging Friendly Addiction Services (MAFAS) services (especially opioids) and overdose prevention, especially for older adults.
• Helps to draft and maintain internal protocols.
• Performs screening, recruitment, enrollment, and referral to treatment for addictions and other health conditions.
• Initiates and implements community-based assessment of medication assisted therapy for substance use disorders and may facilitate initiation or monitoring within scope of practice.
• Develops and implements protocols and programs with healthcare team and community partners to facilitate telehealth access for older adults.
• Coordinates with peer and community-based partners to deliver care coordination activities such as communication, advocacy, provision of care, and other services.
• Collaborates with peer and community-based partners to develop and implement interventions to address digital literacy for improved physical, mental, and social health.
• Coordinates with community partners and peers on the development and promotion of prosocial connection interventions to address social isolation.
• Assists in the development and implementation of various health education, health promotion and disease prevention activities especially related to older adults with addictions, with a special focus on participant engagement.
• Consults with experts in addictions, aging, and related conditions to provide guidance, instruction or training to other healthcare team members, including nurses, auxiliary personnel, and older adults with addictions towards creating Aging Friendly Addiction Services at HARP and in community sites.
• Identifies program or protocol or patient or partner problems and informs supervisors. May resolve problem by making program or protocol modifications or adjustments after consultation with supervisors and partners.
• Provides individual instruction, guidance and counseling on health problems, concerns, treatments and procedures.
• Evaluates the nature and severity of patient's problem(s) utilizing nursing assessment skills. Determines appropriate level of care needed and develops a nursing plan of care. Recommends modifications and adjustments to care plans.
• Performs various nursing procedures such as the administration of medications and injections and the treatment of wounds and burns.
• Assists physicians and other health care providers with tasks such as patient examination and diagnostic procedures.
• Develops and implements policies and procedures such as infection control, immunization, and safety.
• Provides assistance to a clinical drug trial or research study by screening volunteers, collecting data, and administering study drug or special procedures.
• Coordinates referrals to community or other health and human service facilities and serves as a patient liaison with these facilities.
• Collects, performs, and/or interprets laboratory tests.
• Supports HARP medication management by reviewing drug inventory including narcotics and other controlled substances.
• May participate on other daily clinical or research activities.
• Participates in quality assurance activities such as peer review, medical record review, program evaluation, and quality improvement efforts.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Master's degree preferred.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience nursing, clinical, or in a relevant research specialization related to the position. Experience in addiction treatment or older adult care preferred. Experience with harm reduction principles and community-based care preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Current Maryland license in good standing issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse in Maryland or appropriate federal district licensure where research is conducted.
Other: Certification from Association of Clinical Research Professionals or Society of Clinical Research Associates preferred. May require training related to substance use and addiction, aging friendly healthcare, harm reduction, wound care, occupational health and safety, environmental compliance, research protocols, and other role specific content.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

In-depth knowledge of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act. Strong clinical skills, including aseptic techniques, infection control, and patient assessment. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Familiarity with Baltimore's healthcare landscape is preferred.

Hiring Range: $85,000 - $103,000, commensurate with education and experience.
