Job Description

This entry-level position is responsible for performing the basic functions in the cellar with supervision. All brewery employees are expected to participate in all aspects of brewery operations including cellar work, packaging, and warehouse.

  • Maintains all quality standard and safety set for beer production at Able Baker Brewing.
  • Knows where all raw materials are stored and general layout of the brewery.
  • Correctly and accurately weighs and stages hops, adjuncts, and brewing aids as required for cellar operations.
  • Transfers beer, when needed, to different vessels.
  • Tank management (gravity checks, trub dumps, and dry-hopping).
  • CIP/Sanitization on vessels, and equipment (fermenters, brite beer tanks , canning line, etc.).
  • Yeast management (harvesting, pitching and viability).
  • Cleans and maintains fermentation and brite vessels according to standard operating procedure (SOP).
  • Monitors fermentation by testing gravity, temperature, pH, etc. as required and according to SOP.
  • Applies treatments such as dry hops and other additives according to SOP under supervision.
  • Monitors and corrects the carbonation of beer prior to packaging.
  • Assembles and breaks down appropriate hoses and parts configuration depending on process.
  • Follows SOPs to safely handle chemicals and hoses/vessels under pressure while wearing PPE.
  • Drops yeast from fermentation vessels safely and cleanly as required and according to SOP.
  • Logging of all brewing related notes from brew day through fermentation, finishing, and packaging in paper logs, spreadsheets, and production software.
  • Assist with packaging setup, breakdown, and operation of canner and ancillary equipment.
  • Operate kegging equipment to clean and fill kegs.
  • Operate a forklift safely following safety protocols.
  • Complete end-of-month (EOM) inventory counts with precision.
  • Completes general cleaning tasks (sweeping, scrubbing, organizing, etc.).
  • Maintains a clean and orderly workspace.
  • Performs facility-specific duties as required or assigned.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Experience: Previous experience in a brewery or related industry is highly desirable but not required. Compensation will be based on experience.
  • Knowledge of Brewing Processes: Understanding of brewing processes including fermentation, cellaring, conditioning, and packaging preferred. This includes knowledge of different beer styles, ingredients, and brewing equipment.
  • Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is crucial in ensuring the quality and consistency of the beer produced. This includes monitoring fermentation, checking for off-flavors, and maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and solve problems quickly and effectively is necessary in a fast-paced brewery environment.
  • Team Player: Ability to be self-motivated, work effectively as part of a team, and communicate clearly is vital.
  • Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Organization and Time Management: This position requires the ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and work methodically to meet production deadlines in a fast-paced brewery environment.
  • Passion for Craft Beer: A genuine passion for craft beer and a desire to learn and grow within the industry is highly valued.
  • Flexibility with Schedule: Ability to work full-time, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Computer Skills: Basic computer skills for data entry, inventory management, and operating brewing software.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Ability to stand for 10-12 hours a day
  • Ability to regularly lift or carry 60 pounds above waist
  • Ability to move 165 lbs using proper equipment
  • Ability to maneuver large equipment such as pallet jack and forklift
  • Ability to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel and climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to manipulate valves and clamps
  • Ability to work with hazardous mechanical equipment
  • Ability to handle hazardous chemicals and materials
  • Ability to work in hot, wet, and/or cold conditions
  • Must be at least 21 years or older
